Starling calved yesterday afternoon. She had a bull calf, the largest we’ve ever had. He probably weighs over 100 lb. He looks more like a week old, rather than a day. That brings our milking string up to 8 animals, hopefully we’ll be making enough milk to meet customer demand again. Lately the fridge has been emptying out by early afternoon. We would like to be making cheese and maybe separating some cream but if all the milk is selling fresh….
Strawberry season won’t be lasting much longer. The yield has been poor this year due to the early bloom and bad frosts. People showed up in droves this morning to pick, we could have sold a lot more if the fruit had been more plentiful. I guess the best part about farming is that you always get another chance. Every season that goes by I have a long list of things to do differently next year. It’s always both rewarding and frustrating.
